ICSE Class 8, 2026–27 the bridge to the ICSE course
The third language completes, the chapters get more abstract, and Class 9 subject choices come into view. Here is what to know, and what to watch, before the two-year course begins.

Class 8 is the last year before the two-year ICSE course. Next year your child chooses subjects that run all the way to the ICSE examination at the end of Class 10, so this is the year to notice which subjects they understand and enjoy, not only which they score well in. Class 8 tests are still set by the school, and schools choose the books for these years. Class 8 also completes the third language that ICSE requires from Class 5 to Class 8. The chapters grow more abstract: algebra replaces arithmetic shortcuts, and science starts asking why, not just what.
We set out what CISCE's documents say about the step into Class 9, so the choices next year feel familiar rather than sudden.

What this year asks
Nothing new reaches Class 8 itself this session, but these CISCE rules shape what comes straight after it.
The third-language requirement runs from at least Class 5 to Class 8, so Class 8 completes it. The school examines it.
ICSE Regulations for Examination Year 2028 (CISCE, January 2026), Part I: Compulsory
From Class 9, students take six or more subjects: all three of Group I (English, a second language, and History, Civics and Geography), two or three from Group II, and one or two from Group III, plus Socially Useful Productive Work and Community Service.
ICSE Regulations for Examination Year 2028 (CISCE, January 2026)
The ICSE course lasts two years, and a student needs at least 75% attendance in each year of it.
ICSE Regulations for Examination Year 2028 (CISCE, January 2026)
The current regulations list a Section B in Group III of vocational subjects, including Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.

Subjects most ICSE schools teach in Class 8
The usual list; check your school's own timetable.
English
Literature and language side by side, with longer compositions that need a plan.
Hindi (second language)
The second language that ICSE later examines in Group I, so steady progress now pays off.
Third language
The last of the four years ICSE requires; the school examines it.
Mathematics
Algebra used as a tool rather than a trick, and proofs and constructions in geometry.
History and Civics
Answers that weigh causes and consequences, and how government works in practice.
Geography
Maps, data and regions of the world, read and explained rather than memorised.
Physics, Chemistry and Biology
Each science with more why and less what, and more numerical work in Physics and Chemistry.
Computer Studies
Simple programs and logic, a first look at what Class 9's Computer Applications builds on.
Arts Education
Art or performance, which also points towards Group III choices in Class 9.
What the questions will ask
Class 8 exams are the school's. Some guides describe an 80-plus-20 pattern of written paper and project work for Class 8. CISCE prescribes that split for the ICSE examination itself; we have not confirmed that it sets one for Class 8, so ask your school how it divides marks this year.
Expect more questions that ask your child to set up a problem, not just solve one already set up: turn a word problem into an equation, or say which of two causes mattered more. These are the questions that Class 9 and 10 papers build on.
One topic, six kinds of question linear equations
One Mathematics idea, an equation with one unknown, asked six ways.
Remember
State what you must do to both sides of an equation to keep it balanced.
Understand
Explain why x + 7 = 15 and 2x + 14 = 30 have the same solution.
Apply
A pen costs ₹12 more than a pencil, and together they cost ₹40. Write an equation and find the price of the pencil.
Analyse
Two students solved 3(x − 2) = 15. One got x = 7 and the other x = 17/3. Find the step where one of them went wrong.
Evaluate
To compare two phone plans, Meera writes an equation and Kabir draws a table. Which method shows better when each plan is cheaper, and why?
Create
Write your own word problem about a school trip that leads to 25x + 300 = 1,800, then solve it.
Ideas this year rests on
Class 8 leans hard on Classes 6 and 7. If algebra or science feels sudden, look here.
- Negative numbers and the rules for adding and multiplying them.
- Ratio and percentage, which return in every subject from Geography data to Chemistry.
- The particle picture of matter from Class 7, which atoms and molecules now build on.
- Reading a map with a scale and a key.
- Using a source in History: who wrote it, when, and why it might be one-sided.
How SelfEnabler practises this
Choosing Class 9 subjects is easier when you can see understanding, not just marks. A SelfEnabler check shows the kind of question your child can answer today in each topic: recall, explaining, using the idea, or finding the pattern.
Lessons begin with a question before teaching, and notes are put together from your child's own mistakes, the most important gap first. If a topic is "not yet", a person steps in. AI Guru is there for the doubt that turns up at night, teaching from the approved lesson material.

For parents: what to watch this year
Choosing Class 9 subjects by marks alone
Sign: the talk is only about scores. Action: ask your child to explain one topic from each possible subject; interest and understanding last two years, a good test does not.
The third language's last year
Sign: it is treated as optional because it ends. Action: check with the school that the requirement is complete; ICSE expects it from Class 5 to Class 8.
Word problems get skipped
Sign: sums are fine but every word problem is left blank. Action: ask your child to write the equation before solving; the setting-up is the skill.
Questions parents ask about ICSE Class 8
How many subjects are there in ICSE Class 8?
It depends on the school. Most teach around ten to eleven: English, Hindi, a third language, Mathematics, History and Civics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Studies and Arts Education.
Is ICSE Class 8 a board exam?
No. The ICSE board examination is at the end of Class 10. Class 8 exams are set and marked by your school.
Does internal assessment count for promotion to Class 9?
Promotion from Class 8 is your school's decision. We have not found a CISCE rule for Class 8 marks, so ask your school how it weighs projects against written exams.
What is the syllabus for ICSE Class 8 this year?
Your school sets it and chooses the books. CISCE publishes curriculum material for these years; we found no CISCE change for Class 8 in 2026–27.
Is ICSE very tough?
It is different rather than simply harder: more subjects in Classes 9 and 10, a strong reading load, and a share of marks for internal work. Our ICSE and ISC page compares it with CBSE without ranking either.
